Mudlove catches up with Nic Fanciulli, leading DJ, producer and proud creator of international underground house and techno label, ‘Saved Records’.
First things first, you were nominated for a Grammy – did you go to the ceremony?
Yeah that was back in 2007. It was really nice to be up against so many artists that I respected. The ceremony lasted about 7 hours and there was no alcohol – was a struggle, but still a good one!
What are your thoughts as an international DJ, is house music spreading and do you get to adventure much around the world?
I’ve managed to travel the world down to music. Its basically given me the opportunity to see places I could have never imagined I could have gone to. I’ve seen so many places that didn’t have a strong dance culture become a place where I regularly go and play. I think emerging markets are always tricky at first but within time these places become firm fixtures in DJ calendars.
What was your main motivation for starting Saved Records back in 2005?
To release records that I made. This wasn’t the case in the end as we got sent so many amazing demos from talented artists that we ended up side tracking a bit from the original plan. I’m actually glad we did as no one wants to hear my records on every release. The success of the label is down to the artists’ music we sign – nothing else.
How does that vision you have then compare to where the label is now?
Well I touched on that in the last question but I think to run a successful label you have to be able to adapt and move with the times.
Which release, if you had to pick one, do you think best conveyed the vibe of the label in 2011?
I think the record that stands out for me is a track by Harvey M’ckay called ‘Showface.’ I remember listening to this with my brother in the studio about twenty times before I decided to sign it. It was one of those records that I think is a masterpiece but could easily have got lost without the amount of records that get released now days. Fortunately it did really well and I was happy for Harvey and the label.
Which other labels have stood out for you this year?
Joris’s label, Rejected always has great tracks and also Loco Dice’s Desolat imprint too.
Your latest release ‘The Test’ sees you collaborating with Detroit legend, Rolando. Having previously collaborated with a number of big names in the past, how was it working with him? Tell us a bit about the production process and the feeling behind the track.
The guy is a legend. He’s one of those people that does things so effortlessly, whether it’s making records or even DJ’ing. We live in such a advanced age now that producers are fortunate enough to be able to work on records together from the other side of the world.
With this track our touring schedules meant that we couldn’t actually get together in the studio. So I would work on the track, send it over to him, he’d send it back after working on it and gradually something really nice began to take shape. I think there is something to be said about working together side by side in the studio although, as it creates that all-important vibe, which ultimately shapes the track.
What is the single most important piece of advice you would give to young producers hoping to get noticed?
Just be original and do it because you enjoy it. I think talent alway’s come through in the end.
Here is the final question we always like asking on the ML blog – do you think DJs are modern rockstars?
Yeah, there are a few! I think the coolest ones are Lee Burridge and Danny Howells!
Nic will be playing alongside Jamie Jones and Damian Lazarus at ‘Saved Returns‘ in Maidstone on April 8th.
