THE 2 BEARS: BE STRONG

For those that don’t know, 2 Bears is an audio amalgamation, made up of Joe Goddard from Hot Chip and Raf Daddy. Both are part of the Greco-Roman Soundsystem and have already shown that they have buckets of talent, not only with their careers but also with recent releases under their moniker as 2 Bears. This album is definitely not one to disappoint.

There are echoes of Goddard’s Hot Chip throughout the LP – in the lovely little interlude in the ‘The Birds and the Bees’ there’s a sense of sunny serenity that’s similar to Hot Chip’s track ‘Lemon Jelly’.

A happy summer holiday feel swims and dances throughout the album. ‘Church’ is a good example of this, oozing Caribbean sounds and steel drums – all that’s needed is a squeeze of lime, some juice and a good shake over ice to see you flying free from a sober commute.

There’s a tropical reggaeton edge to ‘Warm & Easy’, which features a snippet of a moombahton drum pattern –  ’it’s more wiley than Wiley but nowhere near as trim as Trim.’

‘Bear Hug’ is no doubt one of the standouts tracks by the electro duo, giving valuable insight into what the album can deliver – it’s a strong track but leaves you longing for more vocal. Another excellent vocal can be heard lulling in the beat ‘Take a look around’ – as the drops kicks in, you’re whisked to another dimension serenaded by the female voices that sings alongside Goddard’s.

Raf Daddy’s voice fits snugly into the track ‘Church’ which is definitley one of the best on the LP and for all you Midland fans – his remix of this track is definitely the one.

Overall the album sees you flying away to a carefree summery paradise, flowing effortlessly and spilling with feel good melodies while displaying a unique electro production style throughout.

‘Reach out and keep a hold of somebody there won’t be no problems if you just move your body’.

‘Reflections’ EP

Greenville Massive are Danish duo Jesper Zebitz and Simon Knosgaard, featuring here on the embryonic Initials label. Both act and label are fresh, and this one is really quite exciting.

This is largely because of ‘Box’, the standout track. The intro is smooth and glides into the ear almost undetected, before bursting into life with a bass so resonant it sounds like it was recorded in a Cathedral. The sampled and highly processed guitar twangs loop over and over creating a euphoric backdrop for a crisp, straightforward beat. The track envelopes you in warmth like an opiate, it is truly soulful deep house with a distinctly Northern European feel.

Flavours

There’s already been a plethora of music out in 2012 but here’s three records that have had plenty of my attention over the last few weeks.

John Talabot – ƒin (Permanent Vacation)

The vocal collaborations on ‘Destiny’ and ‘So Will Be Now..’ with Pional and on ‘Journeys’ with Ekhi are the obvious highlights of this remarkable album but as John Talabot recently said in an interview, he doesn’t want any song to “get more attention by themselves than the full album.” He’s right of course, although you can imagine these three songs being played in all sorts of contexts – at home, at a party or in a club, every track here feels as it were carefully designed for the bigger picture. Unlike his 12″ releases on Permanent Vacation or on his own Hivern imprint, these songs are far darker and ambiguous in tone; he doesn’t try to conjure up the same jubilant feelings of ‘Families’ or summery vibe as on ‘Sunshine’ but nonetheless each track on fin is similarly assured and no less celebratory. Without ever relying on classic emotive signififiers that so many dance producers do – moody string arrangements, overly sincere monologues or samples of children laughing to name but a few – John Talabot has created an album of real heart and warmth.

Todd Terje – It’s The Arps EP (Smalltown Supersound)

The artwork may be give away but Todd’s music here is just so colourful and propulsive that each track conjures such vivid imagery, be it strolling down a walkway without a care in the world whilst parrots swoop and glide over ahead or be it driving through some intergalactic space station whilst it rains sweet candy drops. This is sure to be one of 2012’s most fun records.

Dasha Rush – Relativismi (Sonic Groove)

Whilst Todd Terje’s recent EP might be the aural equivalent of colourful space travel, Dasha Rush’s latest EP sounds like being chased further and further down a narrowing tunnel. With a hypnotic 4/4 kick, tense percussion coming in and out of focus, and eerie bells, creaks and screeches all running through the three tracks – a glorious sense of claustrophobia and foreboding abound in this fine Techno record.

INTERVIEW – NIC FANCIULLI

Mudlove catches up with Nic Fanciulli, leading DJ, producer and proud creator of international underground house and techno label, ‘Saved Records’.

First things first, you were nominated for a Grammy – did you go to the ceremony?

Yeah that was back in 2007. It was really nice to be up against so many artists that I respected. The ceremony lasted about 7 hours and there was no alcohol – was a struggle, but still a good one!

What are your thoughts as an international DJ, is house music spreading and do you get to adventure much around the world?

I’ve managed to travel the world down to music. Its basically given me the opportunity to see places I could have never imagined I could have gone to. I’ve seen so many places that didn’t have a strong dance culture become a place where I regularly go and play. I think emerging markets are always tricky at first but within time these places become firm fixtures in DJ calendars.

What was your main motivation for starting Saved Records back in 2005?

To release records that I made. This wasn’t the case in the end as we got sent so many amazing demos from talented artists that we ended up side tracking a bit from the original plan. I’m actually glad we did as no one wants to hear my records on every release. The success of the label is down to the artists’ music we sign – nothing else.

How does that vision you have then compare to where the label is now?

Well I touched on that in the last question but I think to run a successful label you have to be able to adapt and move with the times.

Which release, if you had to pick one, do you think best conveyed the vibe of the label in 2011?

I think the record that stands out for me is a track by Harvey M’ckay called ‘Showface.’ I remember listening to this with my brother in the studio about twenty times before I decided to sign it. It was one of those records that I think is a masterpiece but could easily have got lost without the amount of records that get released now days. Fortunately it did really well and I was happy for Harvey and the label.

Which other labels have stood out for you this year?

Joris’s label, Rejected always has great tracks and also Loco Dice’s Desolat imprint too.

Your latest release ‘The Test’ sees you collaborating with Detroit legend, Rolando. Having previously collaborated with a number of big names in the past, how was it working with him? Tell us a bit about the production process and the feeling behind the track.

The guy is a legend. He’s one of those people that does things so effortlessly, whether it’s making records or even DJ’ing. We live in such a advanced age now that producers are fortunate enough to be able to work on records together from the other side of the world.

With this track our touring schedules meant that we couldn’t actually get together in the studio. So I would work on the track, send it over to him, he’d send it back after working on it and gradually something really nice began to take shape.  I think there is something to be said about working together side by side in the studio although, as it creates that all-important vibe, which ultimately shapes the track.

What is the single most important piece of advice you would give to young producers hoping to get noticed?

Just be original and do it because you enjoy it. I think talent alway’s come through in the end.

Here is the final question we always like asking on the ML blog – do you think DJs are modern rockstars?

Yeah, there are a few! I think the coolest ones are Lee Burridge and Danny Howells!

Nic will be playing alongside Jamie Jones and Damian Lazarus at ‘Saved Returns‘ in Maidstone on April 8th.
